Why have a bibliotherapy scheme?

All families have questions or difficulties from time to time. There is a lot of evidence to say that using good quality self-help materials can be just as effective in addressing mild to moderate difficulties as spending time with a therapist. The books selected for this scheme have been reviewed by professionals and local families who rated them as being both helpful and easy to use.

The scheme allows professionals to recommend self-help books as part of their work with children and families. A recommendation slip can be written out saying which book has been recommended and how long the loan should be. The books are kept in all the local libraries, and people can borrow a book even if they are not a library member.

Who is the scheme for?

Self-help can be used by people at any time, for example:

For parents who wish to understand their children better.

As a first step to helping resolve issues that are a source of stress and unhappiness.

While on a waiting list to see a professional.

As an additional helping hand while working with a professional.

Books for Professionals

In addition a set of books for professionals has been identified and copies will be distributed in each Borough. These include useful therapeutic activities for parents and children where some professional support is in place. Speak to your borough Clinical Psychologist or Primary Mental Health Team for more information.
